  1. It is a bunch of crap that kids are not afforded the same opportunities! We preach in this country that the children are our future, what future do kids have? I would bet that half the schools or more in this country do not even teach kids how to balance a checkbook! The two schools are so far from each other it is mindblowing. We just gave all of the banks and car companies $800 trillion dollars. Perhaps that money could have been put into education and we wouldn't have the financial crisis we have now if everyone was better educated.

  2. This is really sad that kids have to suffer just because of the income and the surroundings of where they live when its really not up to them. At the same time this is really nothing to be proud of... how cant kids get the equal treatment as others....and im pretty sure their surroundings has alot to do with the way their grades are and the grduating percentage......its actually not fair at all kids dont ask to be in this world and its bad and not nothing good to be proud about at all....i mean it makes you wonder where are the tax money that people in our society are paying where is this money from this nc school lottery tickets where is all this money going too??? kids shouldnt have to suffer and lack education because of a certain income and where they live its cearly not up to them.

  3. This so true in America your money determines your education and your status in society. We think just because a person has access to education they are qualified or can do anthing that want to do in our society. We forget that somewhere along the line we still have inequality in America. It is sad to say that kids destiny and dreams are determined by his or her parents income and surroundings in society America.

  4. Walls I agree with you. All of that money given to the wealthy to continue to stay that way. Obviously no one was thinking about these kids!Dr.Greenfield this brings tears to my eyes knowing that some kids really want to have a better life and education and the resources are not available for them. I feel society has really paved the way for those who already have it all. It's not fair to those who lack from proverty etc. I will say that not all kids want a better education but for those who want to why aren't the people that have the statistics going into these neighborhoods and giving a helping hand. Cause alot of the inner city families don't have the transportation and other means to reach out. Not all the suburban or wealthy kids want a better education so if we could put that cost to a inner city child who wants too we can start from there and then the money is still not wasted. Maybe I'm getting to emotional or personal with this but when it comes to kids I go above and beyond cause they didn't ask to be here so why should they be punished because of their living situation. I have worked in the population with inner city kids and they are some very intelligent kids in a bad situation but really want to do better. So can we began to try and fix it?

  5. I really think that it was so sad and pitiful that these kids didint have tyhe same resources as the others. We see first hand how this going on in america. If we really look at it we can say the same thing about Shaw University and NC State. even though one is an private school and the other is an state school there should still be somewhere in the government where the private institutions have the same capabilites and limitlesss resources as the stae schools. But at the end of the day I beleive te people in the less fortunate schools learn how to appreciate things even the more!

Well I agree that what all of you guys are saying is true. I feel as though something can be done about a situation as hectic a having an unstable learning environment for the students. I do understand that there was alot said about the bad but what I enjoyed most about the video is how a few students were chosen to check out the opposite school and experience/view the good and bad within their learning environements. But it's sad having such low percentages within the graduats and testing at Harper High. What's also sad is how unorganized, behind and corrupt the school is. The Suburban school is much more appealing and has lots more to offer to the students throughout the classrooms but as for Harper High it looks like an abandoned apartment. To my understanding I believe the person in charge needs to take a lead way and try to make it better so students would want to learn, do better, attend school daily and appreciate what they have.

  7. while watching this video it wasnt surprising to see the vast difference between the community schools. Growing up in an inner city, i experienced this first hand. if it wasn't for my talent as a dancer and singer i would have been forced to attend my neighborhood school which was horrible. Its a sad reality that inner city school have zero expectations for its students while suburban community schools expect the best and are often given the best by its students.

  8. It really makes me sad that all schools don't have the same resources so taht all high school students have the same opportunities. I thought that my high school was run down but when I saw Harper High School, I was like WOW, we had a lot. I can't believe that Harper High school only had 2 AP courses to offer to the students. I feel that in that case it might be the school have a hard time finding a teacher who has been trained to teach advanced classes, or maybe the teachers just don't want to be trained to teach the advanced classes. But I do remember in high school I wanted to take IB physics so I signed uup to take the class in the fall and then I found out that the class was cancelled because only two students wanted to take the class. So maybe find some students to take the classes play a part as well.

  9. Oh my god!!!!! After watching the video it really upset me to see that there are children out here in the world that really want to do something with their life, but just because their parents does not make that much money they have to suffer. I find the situation ridiculous that we live in a society where all students can not receive the proper teaching because of where they live or because of how their low income is. After looking at the video made me think about what my high school also lacked. We didn't have pools at our school and we also had leaks in our ceilings as well. Education plays a major role in our society and when you are in a school that is not in good condition it makes you sometimes ask yourself why should I even try? I am a person that know how it feels to wonder why because where I am from our schools have always lacked in a lot of things. But you have to really know what is right in life and stick to your plan.....no matter what. You can do it!

  10. I also agree with walls! It is a shame that we have all this money in the world and we would rather spend it on something that truly does not mean more that the future. The children really are the future and if our society states that all the time then it is time that they start acting like it. Everyone should be able to receive the equal amount of teaching, not by how much money your parents make.

  11. Tereze,
Im glad that you brought that up. I love Shaw because it is a work in progress. We can all do something to better Shaw. I transferred from East Carolina and one thing I was very disappointed in when I got to Shaw was the attitudes of some of the staff at Shaw. I went to the registrar's office one morning and pretty much got fussed out for asking a simple question. I was hurt. With attitudes like that Im not surprised why some students feel discouraged, and feel like they don't have anyone to confide in. I get scared when I have to walk in the registrar's office because I feel like I'm wrong just for trying to get my information straight. So I beleive that has a lot to do with it. If the attitudes of the staff were a little bit better towards students, the students would want to do more, and they would want to try harder. But when a student feels that someone who is supposed to encourage them just doesnt care, chances are that student is not going to care. When I walked into the registrar at ECU I was acknowledged, and greeted with a smile, no one rolled their eyes or smacked their lips. But I do wish that some students at Shaw had the chance to go to ECU for a day and to just sit in the classroom. I hear a lot of students say that because we are at Shaw that means that we are dumb. The same things that I learned in the classes at ECU are the same things that I hear in some classes at Shaw. Its the same curriculum pretty much, but because Shaw is a HBCU its talked bad about. Its sad!

  12. Watching this video didn't show me anything new, this type of stuff is on the tv everyday. It's really sad that all kids can't get the same education or resources in this world today. Is also sad that your incomes determines your status in the society today. But when you think about it... school is what you make, even though all schools aren't the same. They still have the same goal and that is for you to get an education, graduate and make something out of youself in life. It would be wonderful if all schools were the same and have the same equal opportunities but I honestly think the school system will never be equal.

  13. While watching this clip I completely connected with the kids from Harper High. In Detroit the same inequality has been there among many schools with the exception of one maybe two in the inner city. Oprah hit the nail right on the head when she said that its because of the expectations an inner city school has, which as you have seen is not a lot. I also agree with John that the money that we used to bailout banks and other companies should have been used for the betterment of education because with better education brings better job better jobs bring a better economy. It's sad how inner-city schools get a bad rep and cant turn it around either because of the community or not enough funds

  14. I agree with those who say that watching this video wasn't really surprising howevr I blame the expectation on the level on education towards the government who gives the schools money. I also believe that it's a race thing. If you haven't noticed that most of the kids that attended Harper High were black and most ok the kids that attended the other school were white. It's been a generation thing that we are inferior to the white culture and that we cannot be apart of their level when in fact it's possible for us to be better. All we need is a chance and major support.

  15. Watching this video clip, it really had me wonder why people pay taxes. Taxes used to help education and seeing what the inner-city pays for is absolutely ridiculous. My heart feels very sad because when equality of education was granted so long ago, videos like that make you wonder if we're still equal today.... Back in the 50s the impact of Brown Vs. Board of Education made a statement (or at least we thought it did) about every person, of every race obtaining an equal education, but with the variations in percentage rates of graduation and academics within the two schools, it's not getting better or equal..it's getting worse...We can do much better...we need to do a whole lot better!!!

  16. Phoenix09 (Walls), you make a good point about the schools. I mean if i had kids i would won't them to have the same education as the other kids in the other school. i would won't my kids bandroom and swimming pool to look the same as the other kids. i feel it's enough money floating around to fix the school up.

  17. I think its real sad that certain schools have access to better resources and others lack those same resources. When I watched as they gave a tour of the two schools I was definitely appalled. I wonder where all the money goes to.

  18. Jasmine you said that you experience some of the same things first hand; did you follow the elections for the school board around your neighbor? Was there a plan to better your inner city schools?

  19. Tereze and dthauser very very good points. The attitudes of some staff here at Shaw stinks! My peasonal view on that is with any administrative staff that is the beginning and end to most. If you're gonna have people reprsenting you then they need to be taught some etiquette skills. It's not a good look for someone coming from NC State, ECU or UNC etc casue they are going to feel as though "Why did I leave my university to come here". Sometime adults have to be redirected as well as children when they are acting in such manner. Why people say you're dumb if you atted Shaw then their ignorant for saying such! Now, I do believe that maybe Shaw alumni doesn't contribute like some colleges such as NC State or some of the above and that could be another reason Shaw campus look this way but it doesn't mean that the professors are any better elsewhere. There are other HBCU schools that are highly recommended and looking at the campus you wouldnt know what type of school it was until you were in there.

  20. Trinette you make a very good point. I often wonder where does our money go that we pay here. Yes I see the plants and some new equipment however we need other things that are more important. Like better classrooms and better computers. We lack the things we need here tahn at other schools. Kids do better if the enviornment is better if their surroundings are in poor shape they don't do as well. Then it is put upon the teachers and professors to motivate the students even harder. Sometimes by the staff we don't even get treated with respect so why should we respect the school. I also often ask why the alumni love this place so much because the students I know that attend here can't stand it. All we need is an opportunity.
